Forget the fab four, think the fab 12. For the next 12 weeks, it’s quiz time again and this time, I will be testing your knowledge of British beetles. Many beetles have metallic or iridescent coloured elytra and thorax, making them - the real shining stars of the show. Beetles can live in a wide range of habitats. Some can fly and others cannot. Some have long antennae, and others long legs. Some have even mastered the art of disguise! Prepared to be be(et)dazzled and if you’re feeling lucky, perhaps you can even guess the bonus quiz question!Magical mystery beetle quiz #8Clue: Buzz twice.Bonus quiz: Dreamy ham art.

Am on leave tomorrow, hence the early posting!Congratulations to all of you who guessed Bee beetle (Trichius fasciatus). First a bit about the clues. First clue: Buzz twice. Bees make a buzzing sound. ‘Bee’ features twice in this beetle’s name. Second clue: Eric. Think Monty Python and their song ‘Eric the half-a-bee’. Half of this beetle’s name is bee! Simples.
Found mainly in open woodland, this relatively uncommon beetle is seen throughout May to August. A scarab beetle, the Bee beetle is a hairy specimen that can grow up to 1cm in length. The elytra of this beetle can be anything from a bright yellow to orange in colour and have black spots, which can also be variable. Bee beetles are partial to roses and Thyme flowers.
A picture of a Bee beetle can be found here.
Did you know: the Bee beetle was named thus, because of its buzzing flight and colour.
Bonus quiz answer: Martha my dear. 1968, The Beatles Album.
Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery beetle quiz here soon!
Take care,
Claire
