Magical mystery beetle quiz #6

Forget the fab four, think the fab 12. For the next 12 weeks, it’s quiz time again and this time, I will be testing your knowledge of British beetles. Many beetles have metallic or iridescent coloured elytra and thorax, making them - the real shining stars of the show. Beetles can live in a wide range of habitats. Some can fly and others cannot. Some have long antennae, and others long legs. Some have even mastered the art of disguise! Prepared to be be(et)dazzled and if you’re feeling lucky, perhaps you can even guess the bonus quiz question!

Magical mystery beetle quiz #6
Clue: A clear view

Bonus quiz: Hog heaven smiles.

  • Congratulations to all of you who guessed Eyed ladybird (Anatis ocellata). First a bit about the clues. First clue: A good view. We use our eyes to get a view of things. With lots of eyes you would get a good all round view. Second clue: As a tactile loan. This is simply an anagram of the Latin for Eyed ladybird, Anatis ocellata.

Ladybirds are one of our best known beetles, so the Eyed ladybird is in good company. The largest of our ladybirds, the Eyed ladybird can grow up to 1cm in length. Eyed ladybirds are a russet or burgundy coloured beetle that feature 18 large black spots with pale rings (sometimes absent) around them. Dormant throughout winter, like most other ladybirds, they are also partial to aphids.

A picture of an Eyed ladybird can be found here.

Did you know: Eyed ladybird’s are partial to pine trees and are often on or under such.

Bonus quiz answer: She's leaving home, 1967. Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart's Club band.

Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery beetle quiz here soon!

    Take care,

  • They certainly encourage me to eat more which can be a problem as I will be taking them for over 2 years so brittle bones could be a problem and extra weight will not help there. At least they saved a lot of my sight and I can get out and about again and moan like heck about everything,Chris says nothing new there !!
