Congratulations to all of you who guessed Quaking grass (Briza media). Let’s start with the clues! First clue: Des res for the Acjachemen. Quaking grass is also known as Wigwam. A wigwam is a domestic dwelling once inhabited by the Acjachemen, an indigenous tribe of Southern California. The second clue: Shaanxi. This refers to one of the world’s deadliest (to date) earthquakes. It occurred in 1556 and killed almost 830,000 people. Earthquake is another name for Quaking grass.
Quaking grass is a hardy perennial grass that grows up to 40cm in height and has distinctive heart shaped flower heads that quiver at the end of delicate stems. This grass flowers between June and September and preferring chalk soils it can often be found in meadows and chalk grassland. It grows in short clumps and has dark green leaves.
