Once again, it’s time for MrsT’s quizzes to branch out and spread their roots, and this round... you’ve guessed it, its trees! They help regulate our climate and provide food and shelter for a whole host of animals as well as providing us with a variety of resources, we might otherwise take for granted. Let’s face it, what wood (pun intended) the world be without trees? They come in all shapes and sizes, as do the leaves and fruit that they bare and yes, I was one of those kids who loved the school trip to Westonbirt Arboretum. For the next 12 weeks, I will leaf you with a clue or two about trees for you to mulch over.EnjoyMYSTERY TREE QUIZ #9

Well done, BW. You've done it again. An elegantly simple solution.
There was no need to throw yourself on the ground in frustration, Ray. Hope it's not too painful.

Congratulations to all of you who guessed (Common) Beech (Fagus sylvatica). Let’s start with the clues! First clue: Pause café. This is French for Coffee break. Beech nuts are still roasted and used as a coffee substitute (hence Coffee break) in France. The second clue: A frigate has 3, a schooner only 2. Both Frigates and Schooners are types of boat, which have masts. Masts are another name for the nuts found on Beech trees.
Beech can grow to 40 metres in height and though they can live for hundreds of years, some can reach 1000 years old. Beech leaves are oval shaped with a pointed tip and wavy edges. The female flower eventually forms the beech masts. Beech provides food and shelter for a whole host of animals, fungi and lichen. Beech leaves are thought to have medicinal properties and can be used to relieve swellings.
A picture of a Beech tree is found here.
Did you know that: Fagus was the Celtic god of beech trees.
Keep an eye out for next week’s Mystery tree quiz here soon!
Take care,
Claire
Wow, thought I knew French but didn't know coffee break. Cleverly, Google gives commercial links first so that didn't show on first search page. First of these tree quiz items I've followed, are they always this difficult? But loved it even though I had no clue and not much of a tree expert, looking forward to the next one. Are they ever bird themed on this quiz , as I know there are many knowledgable people here who would surely solve immediately, myself excluded obviously.
David
Hi Davenboy, i have done Bird related quizzes in the past and will no doubt do another one at some point. I try to cover all nature and despite my efforts to be cunning, there are some clever folk out there, who always out smart me!
