MYSTERY TREE QUIZ #1

Once again, it’s time for MrsT’s quizzes to branch out and spread their roots, and this round... you’ve guessed it, its trees! They help regulate our climate and provide food and shelter for a whole host of animals as well as providing us with a variety of resources, we might otherwise take for granted. Let’s face it, what wood (pun intended) the world be without trees? They come in all shapes and sizes, as do the leaves and fruit that they bare and yes, I was one of those kids who loved the school trip to Westonbirt Arboretum. For the next 12 weeks, I will leaf you with a clue or two about trees for you to mulch over.

Enjoy

MYSTERY TREE QUIZ #1
Clue: Mr C. Olor

  • Well Mrs T you have got me stumped, as I was thinking of a Willow tree, But I am not so sure now.

  • Following on from Hazy's suggestion, there is a Sessile Oak but can't see how this relates to the first clue.

I did wonder if it was an anagram of "Mister C Olor" (spelt in full) but failed to come up with anything.

  • Is this something to do with dousing for water ? I thought Hazel was the wood of choice here

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • Yay, Pete , you gave me a flash of inspiration.

Cygnus olor is the latin name for Mute Swan. Hence Mr C Olor = male Mute Swan = Cob.

Cobnuts grow on Hazel Trees and as you rightly say Hazel is used for water divining or dousing.

  • Took a while for the penny to drop. If I knew the latin names better I might have got there quicker.

MrsT, if that is the answer, you've got a very devious mind. Respect.

  • You called ?  LOL      I know the Hazel is Corylus so is that the C  bit of it ?    I must find a Hazel twig somewhere and try my skills at water diving, even my maiden name was based on the word Dowsing  lol

  • Hmmm. MrsT used "doused in water". To douse usually means to drench but it can also be spelt dowse. However, as Hazy has inferred to dowse is to search for water and I don't know whether an alternative spelling can be used in this context. So, where does that leave us?
