Moderators poll - how are we doing?

A brave move, maybe, but we do listen to feedback and we want to know if you are happy with our current approach or if you think we need to be doing more on the communities. We've learned by now that whatever we do we cannot please everyone but we hope to be helping towards making this a fun and informative place to be.

I've selected a few options in the poll, please answer the most appropriate, again if more than one seem appropriate please add that in a comment or if you have any more constructive comments please share them. Thanks.

  • Well done Ian,think you are doing just right,we are probably a picky lot as proved by the Good Egg Poll.

  • I mentioned on another thread that the spell check is no good, all you get is Error, Doc Type html,  can you translate  please what it is.

  • Hi wren if you reported the spellcheck problem as an issue in the 'fundamental things still not working' thread it will be picked up by Frankie and the technical staff working on these ongoing issues. I have no idea what the cause of this is so cannot help i'm afraid.

Everyone else, thank you for your comments, the feedback is appreciated and if you do have any suggestions for features or ways or working that we can adopt to make things better please pop them on here.

  • I agree with Bob and don't have problems with the Moderators work and the day to day moderating that you do, you are the front line in relaying the news to us, the community members, and therefore are also the target for our gripes .........sorry  !

The one major thing worrying me is that I see a lot less activity on these Forums due mainly to the difficulties and frustrations since the website upgrade commenced and it has driven some of the Members away permanently which is such a shame when they contributed some wonderful blogs and photos.   I think the thread about the G.Egg award changes being made and discussion is secondary to getting the technical running of this site and its ongoing problems sorted out.   Members have given you a lot of feedback on problems and fears they are experiencing but the progress is slow although I know these things can't happen overnight and take many hours/days/weeks to sort through.

I see that posts often only get one or two replies as members don't spend as much time on this community whilst they wait for the gremlins to be sorted out.  I and a few of the regular members continue to post photos and struggle through the website errors as we don't want this wonderful community to die a death whilst waiting for the rest of the Members to come back on a regular basis and start posting again.    I understand you had to upgrade due to the software providers, etc., but please let us not be discussing the less important issues until we have a super-fast and less muddling version of this lovely Community and its pages.    I really have enjoyed my first year as a Member on here and have gained such an enormous amount of valuable knowledge and also enjoyed the camaraderie.

Sorry I've rattled on a bit long,  instead of "save the Otter" I am currently concerned with "save the community"   LOL  and if there are any spelling mistakes in this, then please forgive me as the spell checker isn't working on here  !!!   also forgive me if this feedback is in part, in the wrong section !

  • I think you all do a good job as moderators - I did vote for number 2 as it would be nice to see more of you posting for pleasure, so we could get to know you all better.  Just out of interest, how many Moderators are there?

  • Morning, MrsT is moderating today but i'm taking a while out of my normal role to answer a few questions on here. Firstly, you will see that this has now been made a sticky. It was not made a sticky at first because I made a judgement call that there was already quite a few stickies and that this post may have plenty of responses keeping it hovering near the top. I hope that makes sense.

Limpy, we try to post when we can either during our moderating days or when we can get a break from the other roles that we occupy as full time RSPB staff, I occasionally drop in outside of work as well. Basically the moderating is carried out by the wildlife enquiries team, principally MrsT, Tom, Ben and myself with back up from the others in the team. The web team are also there to assist if neccessary, you may have seen Maurice pop up every now and then and the other web editors may be familiar to you from the notes on nature blog. We take turns in moderating, we have a rota, and when we are not moderating we are the people who answer all of the letters, emails and calls about the various conservation work the RSPB does as well as doing various other roles such as training other staff, attending events, providing information to other departments and basically being as helpful as we can so that the RSPB runs as smoothly as possible. We all have mixed backgrounds but the common factor between us all is a deep interest in nature conservation, one that we share with all of you!

I hope that is useful and gives you an idea of who we are!

  • Hi Limpy.

I totally agree with you that posting for pleasure, generating discussion, generally being chatty and friendly and sharing more about ourselves should be something that I do more and I will endeavor to do a bit more of that from now on!

My background lies in zoology and geography, I used to work in a zoo but studied geography at University. I love wildlife from all over the world, love travelling too! I flirted with being a bit of a twitcher for a while but soon became more interested in just getting out there and seeing wildlife no matter what and how rare, my interest in photography grew and now I focus my free time on getting out there and taking wildlife photos, feel free to have a look at my Flickr site here: www.flickr.com/.../52702463@N05

    Cheers!
