Often confused as insects (despite having no antennae) spiders, though they are also members of the Arthropod phylum, belong to the largest order of Arachnids. In fact, as of 2008, a massive 43,678 spider species have been recorded (that’s a lot of legs!!!!). As you know, each spider has eight legs, and if you look close enough you’ll notice that their mouthparts are primed with tiny fangs. Bizarrely enough I suffer from Arachnophobia, but even I have to admit that this diverse group of creatures are absolutely fascinating and I do hope you will join me for next 12 weeks as I test your spidey senses.Have fun,ClaireMYSTERY SPIDER QUIZ #2Clue: April in Paris.
Oh, ok. Perhaps I'll post an easier clue tomorrow.
Are Springtails members of the arachnid family?
Cin J
Hi Caroline, springtails are arthropods like spiders, but are not members of the arachnid family. They belong to the class Entognatha and have internal mouth-parts. Hope this helps.Claire

Congratulations to all of you who guessed Giant house spider (Tegenaria duellica). First a bit about the clues! First clue: April in Paris. This refers to the essay written by David Sedaris which is about his relationship with Giant house spiders and one particular one called April. The essay, if you are interested can be found in the collection of works ‘When you are engulfed in Flames’. The second clue: If looks could kill. This refers to this spider’s size and appearance. Reaching a body length of 18mm, females can have a leg-span of around 45mm (gulp). Giant house spiders are also related to the infamous Hobo spider.
Similar in colouration to the Domestic house spider, Giant house spiders have really hairy legs and abdomen (I doubt they wax though!). A female can live for several years and can survive without food for many months. Giant house spiders were first recorded in 1800. Their webs are flat messy affairs with a funnel at the end. Though they have potent venom enough to subdue their prey, they are no threat to humans.
A picture of a Giant house spider can be found here (you've been warned :) ).
Did you know that: Giant house spiders can clock speeds of up to 1.73ft/s!!!
Keep an eye out (or eight) for next week’s Mystery spider quiz here soon!
Take care,
Claire
Double YUK with shudders Mrs T - interesting about the speed stats - that's why I don't like them & certainly wouldn't get close enough to check if they've waxed!!! LOL - better alternative to squealing in fright!
If my other half met up with this I have an idea it might be an ex spider !!
