MrsT's MAGICAL MYSTERY QUIZ#5

Almost every corner of the globe is home to a wide array of different organisms. But despite this diversity, there are groups of animals that share the most unlikely of similarities. Sticking to the UK, each week for 12 weeks I will test your skills in identifying 12 different organisms that share one characteristic. They can be a plant or a fungi, a bird or a mammal, a fish or an insect!

MAGICAL MYSTERY QUIZ#5

  • Congratulations to all of you who guessed Common broomrape (Orobanche minor). First a bit about the clues! First clue: Green with envy? No, not me. The Common broomrape, like other broomrapes is a non-photosynthetic plant, hence no chlorophyll and therefore no green, the colour of which we are supposed to turn when we experience envy. The second clue: Romance boom romp is simply anagram of Common broomrape.

Common throughout the UK and able to grow in a range of soils, the species has been introduced elsewhere in the world, the US for example. Common broomrape grow up to 1ft 8 inches (0.5m). The main flowering season is from May to the end of August. Common broomrape can appear in a whole host of colours ranging from red-brown and yellow-brown to purple.

A picture of Common broomrape is found here.

Did you know that: the flowers of Common broomrape are hermaphrodite.

Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery quiz!

    Take care,
