New bird enthusiast......

Hi Everyone,

I've just registered for the bird watch (results to be submitted at the end of January) and thought i'd introduce myself! I started feeding the garden birds early 2009 and have really got interested in them. I've lived at my current property for approx 4years and after struggling to pay the bills/decorate/renovate the house on my own, i turned my attention to the garden and it's inhabitants. I cannot believe how lucky i am to have such a wide range of wild birds in my garden! I live in a small town, but my house is on the main road into town - this is also the main route into manchester and visa versa to the motorway (we need a by pass!) - but behind my house is a couple of old people's bungalows then open countryside. I have badgers up the top of the garden too (which make an awful mess!) but it is the birds that have really captured my interest. I have........sparrows (not sure if house or tree or both) dunnocks, blackbirds, thrush, collared doves, wood pidgeons, robins, green finches, gold finches, bull finches, blue tit, coal tit, long tailed tit, great tit, chaffinches, nuthatches,blackcaps and a woodpecker (who first appeared whilst the family were eating christmas dinner!) Yesterday a cock pheasant appeared! All this wildlife just behind a main road is amazing!

I'm thinking of joining the rspb - can anyone recommend doing this? Money is a bit tight after christmas and i would really love to join, but don't have the money to spend if it isn't beneficial.

Thanks for reading - i really am excited about the birds!

Em

  • A big welcome Em, great to hear about all your visiters in your garden :) ! Hope to enjoy more of your posts in the near future.

    If it aint broken, dont fix it !.... all good things come to those who wait !

  • Hi Emma,

    A warm welcome from me, and a great deal of envy on my part as regards your lovely collection of birds.  I also only started earlier in 2009 and it didn't take long to get hooked, but I haven't managed to attract some of the ones you have. Congratulations!

    I'm sure you will enjoy participating in the forums, and we all like pictures of your garden birds - so get your camera ready!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hello Emma and welcome, it's good to have you with us and I am sure you will enjoy it here.

    The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

    The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Em, and welcome to the forums.

    I think you would find RSPB membership beneficial. Members receive a very nice and informative magazine four times a year, and free unlimited entry to each of the many RSPB reserves that charge entrance fees. These include brilliant places like Minsmere and Pulborough Brooks. If one of those reserves is local to you, or if you are planning to visit any of them, a membership can bring a big saving. Of course, the birds you love will benefit in two ways; membership fees contribute directly to bird conservation, and the more members the RSPB has, the louder our voice is when we try to save special places from development or convince people including politicians that birds and other wildlife must be taken into account in laws and policies affecting the whole country.

    Hi Em

    Welcome to the RSPB Forums.  I am sure I have said welcome to you in another post, but no harm in another big Hello from me. {big smile}

    Your collection of birds sound really interesting.  If you have Tree Sparrows wow if they are. Can I ask if you are able to get some pictures I would love to see your birds in your garden area anytime {smile}

    As Trochilus has mentioned, I would support the membership of the RSPB 100%.   So if you feel that you can give towards the membership - I would recommend it anytime.  It opens another world of things to do, and places to go.  It is a super hobby to have.

    We have a family membership, and carry our membership card everywhere we go (along with our Scottish wildlife Trust card)  So well worth it any time.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Emma.

    Welcome to the forum.  That's a fantastic collection of birds you have visiting you.  It must've been great having a woodpecker visit on Christmas day.  I can fully recommend joining the RSPB, if you can afford to.  I joined near the end of 2007 and have enjoyed many benefits. :-)

    Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Hi Emma and welcome to the forums :o)

    You have so much wildlife in your garden!  I'd never want to leave the house through being frightened of missing something!

    I'm impressed by your bird-related Christmas present!  Never had the pleasure of a Woodpecker here.

    I would highly recommend membership to the RSPB, if you can afford it that is, although I think it may be possible to pay monthly.  Forgive me if I'm wrong, mine is due soon and I can't quite remember the payment options.

    Personally I find it gratifying to know you are helping play your (albeit small) part in helping conserve this wonderful and diverse natural world of ours.

    Plus when you're in need of a great day out you can head along to an RSPB reserve - and get in for free :o)
