Hi everyone,
I am a medically retired secondary school science teacher. I was retired 4 years ago with MS. While working I always aimed to keep our school wildlife pond healthy. I encouraged other adults to help in the pond upkeep, The children were delighted to have a good healthy pond. i think they thought that a pond just keeps itself good but of course it doesn't. As we all know every thing links. Good pond, good insect population plenty of food for birds.

Hello Jan and welcome to the forum. Like you I "retired" early - in my case due to arthritis. Well done on the good work you did with the school pond. It was only yesterday that I commented to a friend "Whatever happened to nature walks for primary school children?". Computer images and t.v. all have their place but I believe there's really nothing to match real life experiences.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

I agree Squirrel! Mum often talks about the nature walks she went on as a child. We never did and I would have LOVED it!

Welcome to the forum! There are so many wonderful things to learn here, you must see the gallery too - the photographs are amazing.
I currently work for a primary school and I am pleased to say we still do nature walks! We also have beach trips for the children to discover rock pools and the life within them. Working closely with the local council our school has been involved in tree planting excursions. Our Y2 teacher has created a wonderful garden in our school together with the pupils, they have created a small pond specifically to encourage insects.
