Hello from Co Durham

Hi I've just joined today.   I love watching garden birds and have planted my garden with many items that will attract them such as pyracantha, rowan, lots of evergreens for cover in all seasons, - holly, berberis etc.  I also have a small pond and love to watch the birds bathing there.  Today I saw 4 long tailed tits on the nut feeder.  I am enjoying reading  all your posts.

  • Hi Jaybee, it's good to "meet" you. As you are finding out this is a friendly forum with lots of helpful and knowledgeable (on a very wide range of subjects) contributors. I also love watching my garden birds and do all I can to encourage them. Your garden sounds lovely - I look forward to seeing some photos. Long-tailed tits are gorgeous, aren't they? Mine haven't visited for over a year now but I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will return this winter as I love their antics.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Thanks for your welcome Squirrel.  I was surprised to see the long-tailed tits today as I haven't seen any since winter.  Do you think this is a sign that winter is on its way?  I do hope that we get a bit more of this fine autumn weather first..  It has been quite pleasant here today - sunny this morning but even when it clouded over later it was still quite mild.

  • Hi again Jaybee... I also hope we get more autumn first as we have had hardly any here yet. I don't know about it being a sign that winter is on its way as I am not that knowledgeable but I wonder if, maybe, it's a sign that it might be a hard winter. Having said that, it's been a bit of a strange summer bird-wise as they haven't stopped coming to my feeders at all - feeding as frantically as they normally do during winter. And my purse is the emptier because of it!

  • Hello, Jaybee, and welcome to the site.  I also like watching garden birds although I've never seen any long-tailed tits.  Your garden sounds like a real haven for wildlife.

  • Hi Jaybee

  • Welcome your garden sounds very nice i live in a town house but have a static caravan in the country where i have a small garden with bird feeders where the squirrels pinch the nuts i put out,but i don't mind as they are interesting to watch. It passes the time but i have never seen a long tailed tit ever, we have blackbirds, blue tits, great tits ,chaffinches, thrushes, wood pigeons, the odd pheasant and a mallard that comes around.

  • Hello & welcome Jaybee! I'm sure you'll enjoy it here!

Your garden sounds great! So good to know that so many people welcome wildlife into their gardens as they are so important for them, particularly is suburban locations!
