Pied wagtail invades shop

We have pied wagtails roosting at night in trees outside shops at Rushden Lakes. They have started to come into the Jones Bootmaker store this week. Fortunately one on Saturday flew back out after a good look around. Unfortunately one got in yesterday and progressed into the stockroom. It is quite open and has a high ceiling. What is the best way to entice it out? How can we stop them coming in? They roosted in the same trees last winter and it wasn't a problem then. Help! Julie L.

  • Hi Julie, thanks for trying to help the birds! The best advice I've seen about enticing them out is from the RSPCA:

    • Give the bird time to find their own way out
    • Open an external door or window and give only one source of light (block off all other light sources, including the fireplace)
    • It may take some time for the bird to leave, so the room should be left quiet and empty
    • Follow by monitoring quietly for two hours

That second point - covering up all the windows/doors except the one yuo want them to exit from, then giving them time to find it, seems key. If all else fails, they suggest calling the RSPCA and enquiring if one of their officers can help.

As for stopping them coming in, gardeners often hang shiny things like CDs or things that move in the wind like windspinners to dissuade birds, so perhaps something like that near to where they are entering?

It would be great to hear back if you have any success so we know what the answer is!

  • Thanks for the advice Adam.

The wagtail has just walked out of the shop, cheeping away. The shiny stars in the window do not seem to be putting them off coming in.

    Julie

  • Glad to hear of a happy ending (until the next visit!)
