We've just retired to the South Gower Coast village of Southgate. Each morning I'm seeing black birds in the garden, most of them ringed, either on one leg or occasionally large ring left leg, and small ring right leg. I know nothing about birds but interested to learn more. What birds are they - not huge, short dark beak? And why are so many ringed?
I can't make out what your bird is, PW, possibly a juvenile starling, although equally possibly not! HERE is a link to the BTO ringing scheme.
Looks like a blackbird to me. (very outside chance of ring ouzel but no way of telling from the photo!)......definitely not ring ouzel if there are a number of them though.
You are very lucky, that looks like a Chough they are ringed as a means to identify them as they are not very common and have been introduced recently into a few areas, I have never seen one in the wild but would love to, they are stunning birds.
I think the beak's the wrong shape and colour, and the legs are the wrong colour for a Chough.... plus the description "short dark beak" is definitely not chough
yes, that and there are several, and they keep coming into the garden. The photo isn't of a chough either.
