Hi there!
We're lucky enough to have a pair of lesser spotted woodpeckers visiting our bird feeder almost every day and wanted to share our pictures. We've even seen them sharing the food with the smaller birds - we love them!
This evening we watched the male collect food and give it to the female who was sitting on the fence. Can anybody tell us why they might do this? Is it a mating ritual?
Thank you!
Very nice but that is a Great Spotted Woodpecker and not A Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. A Lesser is only about the size of a Sparrow, does not have any red about the vent area and does not have those huge white shoulder patches. They are much rarer and very rarely visit gardens.
Also, that is a juvenile which the adult is feeding, they have the red cap ... some info here on telling male, female & juvenile apart ...

When I last saw a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker that was at Middleton Lakes in the West Midlands,, Whether they still breed and nest at that location, i don’t know!

I believe they still lesser spotted woodpeckers at Middleton.
I've not been for a long time, but I know someone who lives nearby and has seen a LSW.
