Hi
Went for a walk today in our local park - urban area - and could not identify this single bird on an island in the middle of the pond. It was black, same size maybe larger than a duck but slimmer with long beak and large wingspan - it stood and spread wings in the sun
looked like a heron initially but it was black and not as long legs
can anyone help??
Hi Kirsty, likely a Cormorant!

I thought that but thought they were a coastal bird?
Far from it, Cormorants are found on inland lakes, rivers and canals. They are disliked by a lot of fresh water anglers due to the amount of fresh water fish they eat.

Thank you; I didn’t know they weren’t restricted to coastal areas. We are slap bang in middle of country; half hour from Brum …. Could not think of anything else
thank you
