Late Departure

Lets try and give this request a bit of a boost.

Unfortunately I don't know enough to answer your question, though it isn't unusual for swallows to be around until very late September.

Perhaps some info on the following questions might help prospective answers.

1. What county are you in (IT'S A PUBLIC NO SPECIFIC ADDRESS OR IDSENTIYING FEATURES PLEASE)?
2. Has the remaining swallow(s) fledged, ie flying?

If the last swallow chick has fledged, then it should only be a matter of time before it starts the long journey south.

I’m in the north of England. All the chics (two lots of four) have left as has the other parent.

I am currently staying in Shropshire and there are still Swallows and Martins around - they may be in transit or just feeding up waiting for favourable winds, they can still be passing through into October - provided there is still some insects to hawk en-route.

Still some house martins in this area, despite the weather and some have clearly left.

My local (north Dorset) Martin's and swallows appear to have gone, and last week in the kinder weather Portland bird observatory were counting 3-500 a day departing if I remember rightly

And of course, because I sent that whilst at work.... when I came home, 200 yards down the road half a dozen martins were fizzing about

I spoke to a former colleague a couple of days ago, who now lives in Northumberland, and still swallows there, along with housemartins.

I've seen house martins on Mull in late September, two years ago.

Yesterday morning I had swallows around. We had them nesting in the porch this year. They have a long way to get down to England and beyond, as I am up at the very top on Scotland.
