Starling eating with beak wide open - please help!

Hi everyone! I have noticed one of my regular starlings has been on the feeder today, but doesn't seem to be getting any food.

He is landing with beak closed looking normal, but then pecking at the food with his beak wide open and not closing it to actually grab the food? So ends up just stabbing at the table with an open beak! 

He can definitely close his beak fully as normal, so I'm really confused.

I have never seen this happen before and am worried incase he is unable to eat now- does anyone know what this could be?
