Mahonia berries

Hi, has anyone else noticed that birds haven’t been eating any of the mahonia berries this year? Ordinarily the magpies in particular gorge themselves but this year, although there are many magpies, the bushes are untouched. I also noticed mahonia bushes untouched elsewhere. Any info would be welcome.Thanks.

  • Hi, we've noticed the same here in North Yorkshire. The blackbirds who visited our garden usually have feasted on them but this year not really showing the same interested.. I think in previous years the berries have appeared earlier in spring, may be it's down to timing. Be interesting to see if anyone else is experiencing the same.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Clare, thanks for this- we’re on the south coast so it’s unlikely to be geographical. I’ve also noticed that the berries are almost black rather than the usual blueish grape colour.. Bit of a mystery.
