Help Seagull invasion

I bought a top-floor property last year and 80% of it has a flat roof. In the last 2 to 3 weeks I've been getting woken up by seagulls jumping about (or whatever they are doing) on the roof at regular intervals between Midnight and 6 am.  It sounds like someone is stomping on my head because there is no space or installation between my flat and the roof. It's really starting to impact my mental health because I'm being woken up constantly. Given the size of the roof, I don't know what to do.  This is my first ever property and I've lived by the sea for years but never been in this position - probably because I've never lived in a place with a flat roof!

Any advice is welcome.

  • Thanks, Ian. I've seen this link but the issue I have is that the roof is very big (I have a 3-bedroom flat) so the advice they give would mean a lot of wiring. Also, I can't access the roof because it's so high up and I've spoken to some roofers, but they don't seem to want to get involved in this kind of thing.
  • Thinking laterally, perhaps you could try either 'Noise cancelling earbuds for sleeping' or straight forward ear plugs.

My daughter uses noise cancelling earbuds when she was firstly in university halls three years ago and then digs last year - a house share, in a semi with noisy (student) neighbours. She said the noise cancelling earbuds enabled her to sleep.

I will use foam ear plugs when trying to sleep in a noisy environment. I found a brand called Laser lite to be very good. Squeeze them into a narrow tube, insert in ear, wait until they expand then adjust to make comfortable. They were great when staying at Travel lodges, especially next to John Lennon airport. The hotel has no sound insulation, with large gaps around the slamming doors. People coming and going all night, mostly to catch flights, make a hell of a lot of noise.

Edited to add: The Laser lite ear plugs look like 'Rhubarb and custard' sweets. Try not to eat them.

Both noise cancelling ear buds and foam ear buds do not remove all noise, but they reduce it sufficiently to sleep comfortably. A lot cheaper than getting roofers in.

Look on Amazon as a first port of call.

90% luck, 5% field craft, 5% camera skills.

  • Thanks for your input Angus. I don't think people appreciate how noisy the gulls dive-bombing my roof are and ear plugs don't work (I have tried). And I've not just spent around £350K on a flat to spend most nights in earbuds! Looking for prevention over cure approach from the RSPB!
  • I think you misunderstand this forum...there are no official RSPB members on here offering help..we are all just members of the public with an interest in birds and wildlife and try help each other where possible. So I doubt you will find the solution you are looking for on a public forum...perhaps best contacting RSPB directly for some advice

  • Perhaps you bought a property that wasn't up to your expectations.

    Caveat emptor, etc.
