Blue Tit nesting in my garden

Hi everyone,

I’ve got a blue tit that is currently building a nest in my nest box i placed in my garden a few days ago.  I’ve stupidly put it in a south facing position with no shelter on my fence post (long story but I basically was reading my compass the wrong way :( ). To add to that my neighbour who’s garden the fence backs onto has started large scale house work so it’s a bit noisy in that area.

I know it’s illegal to disturb an active nest but as she is not actually in there yet lying eggs would it best if I move it now to a more north east position and an area that will have less noise or am I better leaving it and hoping it doesn’t get to hot. I’ve bought a parasol that I can use to try to shelter it a little but I’m still worried it wont be enough.

Please no harsh comments I’m really trying to help the wildlife but I’ve made a mistake and already feel awful for it. It’s the first time I’ve put a box nest box up so lesson learnt.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks Pray

  • Hi sorry no one has replied but it is rather quiet the now on here. As you say it would be unlawful to interfere with a live nest and that counts as soon as the 1st piece of nesting material has been laid. So best leave things as they are for this breeding season and sort all in Autumn...chances are it will get abandoned if there is lots of work going on close by to the box.

  • Hi Linda thanks a lot for your reply :)

I’ve managed to put the box a lot more in the shade (without moving it) by putting a bamboo plant under it and cutting a big space around the entrance and nest box. The parasol I’ve got is also actually making a massive difference as well. She visits just in the evenings around 8pm and stays in it all evening I think so I’m not sure if she’s laying eggs or not. Thankfully the works stopped near us hopefully permanently as well so I’m a lot more hopeful it could work outFingers crossed.
  • It could just be a lone male but fingers crossed I am wrong and you have a successful nestbox this season...please keep us updated on the progress...good in bad ;-)
