I have a birdbox with camera in a sheltered corner of our small garden. It was occupied within two days of installation last year and the result was six blue tit chicks, five of them leaving the nest alive. I cleared the box in the autumn.
A blue tit started nest building this year a week earlier than last year, on March 20th. She brought stuff in, then took some out, brought more in. The male joined her twice for a matter of seconds. But on April 8th, with only about an inch of material in the box, she disappeared. Suddenly, three days ago, she reappeared, simply pecking at the entrance and poking her head in. Then today, she entered the box twice, shuffled around for a few seconds, and left. Has anyone any idea about what's going on? I had assumed that she had abandoned the nest until she reappeared, but she's not doing anything. Thanks in advance from a new member!
I've had blue tits coming into two camera birdboxes most days since February. They've put a small amount of nesting material into one of the boxes and then taken it out either the same or next day. No idea what's going on, but up to today, 19th April, they haven't properly got going with building their nest. We haven't had any warm and sunny days yet this year in North Durham - maybe the weather just isn't right for these guys to encourage them to make a nest. Both of our boxes have lights in them - not sure if the lights are to blame.
