Fledgling bird

I had a fledgling bird in the garden yesterday. I think it was a robin.

it was hopping about and trying to find food (I did put some seed out) but could not fly more than 2 feet off the ground.

unfortunately it died over night.

I am wondering why a baby bird was around so early in the year?

    I thought it was a young bird as I couldn’t recognise it as any particular bird.

    It’s back was the brown of a robin and it had a speckled breast and a few speckles on it’s back and it could only flutter about
    2 feet off the ground.

    Although it moved quite quickly along the ground it was breathing very heavily obviously unwell.
