Looks like a male Bullfinch to me but wait for other opinions.

Try looking at Bullfinch, it may be worth using a UK id book rather than one with US birds. We are lucky enough to have at least 3 pair in the garden

American Robins do not have that orange/red colour on their heads.

Thank you all, I'll bow to more experienced birders. I had discounted the Bullfinch as a) I had never seen them in a flock before and b) I thought they looked a lot bigger - basically blackbird or thrush size.

And if it was a flock of American Robins, you'd know it by the number of people following it. with bino's, scopes, camera's and notepads... news travels fast in birding circles of rarities!
