Ilive in Weymouth and yesterday saw a bird eating the palm tree seeds. It was feeding with blackbirds who were not perturbed by its presence. It was nearly twice the size of the blackbirds.

It was black mainly with a starling like back. It had a crimson cap with white around its head. It had a black belly. We are familiar with the spotted wood pecker and this was not one. For start it stood on the fence top and our woodpeckers never do this  they hang onto the trees.

Somebody in the past said the closest they got to a bird in their garden was a  Pileated wood pecker.  this was discarded as they are American birds

Has anyone a cue as to what this might be
