Cinereous Tit in the UK?

Hi,

I've just recently seen a bird exactly like a Great Tit, but with a distinctly silvery grey back. It briefly flew to the kibble feeder, then returned to the nearby tree and disappeared. I'm fairly sure I've had a few brief glimpses before, but can't be sure.

Is there any possibility that it is a Cinereous Tit, or do I need better eyes?

This is just south of Leicester.

Thanks

  • Hi Jon

I must admit I've never heard of a Cinerous Tit so had to look it up. From what I've read it seems to be native to west Asia to south-east Asia so the chances of it making its way to the UK seem to be pretty slim. As well as an ashy coloured back their breasts are white and there are some other distinctive features see Wikipedia.

Don't forget that many birds can have plumage abnormalities which can appear to us as unusual. Any chance of a photo?

  • Hi,

I've seen a similar bird on my feeder for the past couple of days. Looks like a great tit but with grey/white-buff colouring.

  • could it be a coal tit
  • I have had what I believe to be a pair of cinereous tits visiting the window feeder in my Co. Durham garden for the past two years. Similar to great tits that also visit but with grey topside and white underside, the black stripe on the male is wide with defined straight edges while on the female it is narrower with ragged edges.
    Photographs are available.

  • In reply to robinatsel:

Yes please robinatsel re photos. Realistically, they will be great tits. To have one in UK is rare! To have two on a bird feeder is……highly unlikely.,
  • Many cameras (all smart devices utilise GPS tagging, so ensure it is switched on) today have GPS for location tagging photos, so if you which will give weight to the photo location.

Also guys, this thread is nine months old.
