Tufted duck and chick 12 October 2020

Duck chicks are great fun to watch and they're sooooo fluffy. Apart from that I've always been impressed how quickly they take to the water and learn the ropes.

Are you sure about the ID of the chick. It looks more like a young Little Grebe to me which the Tufted Duck is trying to intimidate. Here's what young tufties look like.

Thanks for the reply - I have a set of photos of them "together" in different sections of the pond. I didn't see a little grebe or anything other than mallard, coots and swans so must admit I assumed that the two birds belonged together, but I have seen Little Grebe on this pond in the past. As you say, it is the wrong time of year hence my surprise! Is it not also the wrong time of year for Little Grebe chicks? My point was really that I was surprised to see a chick of any sort in mid October but I am no expert! Will keep an eye out for the chick again and also Little Grebes and hopefully the two together.
