Hello
After weeks of being told by pest control we had a rat in our roof or cavity wall, then squirrels, today he's confirmed our suspicion that it's a bird. We can hear it at around midnight and then about 5 am. We hear a shuffling noise then a woodpecker like tapping which lasts maybe 5 seconds then stops. We do have woodpeckers in the area plus tawny owls and wood pigeons. Is it likely to be a woodpecker or do other birds like to tap away? Is there anything we can do to make sure it is safe but doesn't damage our loft
Thanks very much

Exactly the same as above - 11pm - tap, tap, tap, the 5 secs nothing - goes on for about half an hour - then nothing. Not frightened off by my hitting the ceiling with a slipper or heading into the loft with a torch.
Same at 5am......
I have checked inside and out for any gaps, but can see none.
Any ideas please?
Many thanks as its keeping us awake!!
I strongly suspect that both the original poster, who was told it was 'a bird', and yourself, have a rodent in the roof. Tapping during the night is usually mice. Starlings can tap but bird noises would also occur. Re the original poster, I suspect nothing was found on each visit, and rather than keep coming back, putting it down to a bird would likely avoid being called back again. Birds would be alarmed if someone went in the roof with a light. You would hear flapping too. If there is no noise during the day, it's highly unlikely to be a bird.
