Could someone give their idea on the best priced and up-to-date nature book for birds

The most comprehensive book on UK and European Birds that lots of birdwatchers use is the Collins book of birds in the UK and Europe and is available in hardback and paperback.

Also available on Apple iPhone and iPad and also on Android devises is that Collins bird app. But to get all the extra add on’s like I have is quite expensive.

Hi Benji
I use the RSPB handbook, but that isn't always fully informative (hence my rubbishness at quite a lot of ID's) and I recently got the WILDGuides pocket guide (has photographs rather than drawings), but I'm going to get the full book. I also have the WILDGuides books on Britain's Dragonflies and Britain's Butterflies, which I think are both excellent

The RSPB book is a great for beginners and then maybe the Collins book as people get more advanced but it can be a bit confusing at times. The best we have found recently is the Wild Guide Britain's Birds which a couple of our local tour leaders recommended. There is some great i.d, books out there but try to stick to ones covering Britain and Europe, Some online guides are American and can lead to strange i.d. results.

Personally I like the Lars Jonsson Birds of Europe the best

There are quite a few good books to use for birds and nature generally.

The four I use are, and all books have clear pictures:

RSPB Handbook of British Birds

This second book is a little unique, in that it will list more than one page for many species in the index. This is because many can be similar to others, and enables you to make an informed choice.
