My Song Thrush has found a mate.

Hi everyone I'm so excited, just had to tell everyone, I've been feeling so sorry for the Song Thrush I've had visiting, he/she has been getting mobbed and chased away by the Blakbirds whenever he comes to my garden for a feed, and he's been getting so nervous of late with the Blackbirds now in pairs attacking him, and all on his own while I have noticed lot's of my birds pairing up, I had wondered if he would find a mate with them being so scarce now, AND HE HAS, he turned up today with his own mate, with a mate for support now I hope the Blackbirds might leave him alone. I don't suppose they will though with all the fighting for there patch of land now spring is on it's way.

Being new to this, I don't know but does it ever happen that some birds won't find a mate and miss a breeding season.

  • Hi Sparrow

Thats a lot of food, you must get an awful lot of birds in your garden, I don't get anywhere near to using that much food, something is now eating my mealworms though HURRAY, I think it might be a wren, this morning I spotted one dashing about amoungst the leaves i have on one side of the garden and then over to my conifer bush, and up along the window sills of the garage looking for food, I have spotted this wren before but it never touches the golden chorus I put down, so I put some mealworms along the ground earlier in the day next to the garage wall, and there all gone now, I didn't see who ate them, but suspect it is the wren.

  • Hi BBB, that's great news. Now, if you can put them in the same place and set aside a bit of time to keep watch you will know which bird(s) have found them there and are eating them.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Squirrel, yes, that will have to wait for tomorrow, I've spent so much time watching the birds and on the forum this week, I really must get on with my housework today LOL.

  • That is good news BBB. Wrens need a lot of help to survive this cold because they are so small. A lot don't make it. I only have one that I know of and only see him very occasionally.

I don't use all the mix I mentioned above in one day - I make the mixes and keep them in storage tubs to use as and when. Some days I use a lot, and that is when the county's starlings descend as they arrive in a small flock, devour everything, then depart, leaving a mess everywhere and no suet or mealworms. They don't come every day thank goodness, just my regular starlings who aren't part of this flock. I've just had 2 starlings on a mounted tray I had topped up. They had a fight on the tray - resulting in the whole lot on the ground.

    Cheers, Linda.

[/quote]LOL, I totally agree, but you have to draw the line somewhere, when every one is running out of underpants and you look like you have yetti boots on all the time from walking across a carpet covered in dog hairs, its time to knuckle down and get on with it.

Because it is brilliant, and we all wish we had thought of it first!

  • Hi Sparrow, I don't see my wren very often, when I have spotted him it's been out the corner of my eye I've thought it was a leaf blowing across the garden but on closer inspection realised it's a wren, there so quick to dash in and out of hiding aren't they, so I don't know if my wren is a regular visitor or just once in a while.

There's me being daft again thought you got through that food everyday. shame about the spill. anyway I really must go and do some more work, thats my cuppa break over.
