Hi there
What was the favourite bird that you where lucky to see in 2009?
In the UK I would say it was 2 Crossbills together at one time at RSPB H/Q's at The Lodge. Another bird was the Firecrest in my local patch in Bedford. Such a rare find.
Abroad in Menorca, Spain, May 2009, a male and female Woodchat Shrike sitting on a wire fence together.
In the same area Golden Orioles came a close second.
We are going to Menorca, Spain in May 2010 as we have done so over the past 4 years or so.
So hopefully we will get better sightings of the same birds (new sightings of others we have not seen) and better pictures too.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Some fantastic lists folks! no doubt they'll be listers out and far and wide tomorrow morning! Happy New year one and all!

I'm just going to have to be greedy and have two!! I felt really privileged to see and photograph little owls last year but the real 'best' in 2009 for me was my first ever osprey at the Loch of the Lowes NR!! Even better to have managed to capture a shot of it! A very memorable moment indeed!!

In reality though, there are many more I could mention that have either been first time sightings or just 'better' sightings than ever before!

The holy trinity that was Bearded Tit, Marsh Harrier and Bittern (all first-time sightings for me) at Minsmere back in May, on a day when I logged over 50 species, was nothing short of spectacular. I wondered why I had never thought to go there before.
And lots of 'lifers' when I went to Canada - Bald Eagle (briefly, from the car of all places), Common Loon (a.k.a. Great Northern Diver), Purple Martin, American White Pelican, Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, Cardinal, Baltimore Oriole, American Goldfinch ... and identifying both White-Breasted Nuthatch and Brown-Headed Cowbird while birding in Toronto's High Park. Such a thrill to be in a situation where most species were entirely new to me.
