Hi,
I have been watching the progress of the pair of Swans on Black Park lake. They built and stared sitting on he nest over 5 weeks ago now. Last week female was off the nest but seemed to be putting week back into it and today she was back on it. What is the usual hatching time for swans eggs? How long do signets stay in the nest beofore they venuture out.
This pair has never produced a brood before and I am worried that they may have failed again this year too.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

Think incubation of Swans eggs about a couple of days either side of 5 weeks.
Hi Sarah,
just got this of the Swan Sanctuary web site, hope it helps.
"After the nest has been built, which typically takes 2-3 weeks, the egg laying process begins with an egg being laid every 12-24 hours. Once all the eggs have been laid, which can take 2-3 weeks, they will all be incubated (ie sat on to start the growth process) at the same time with hatching usually 42 days (6 weeks) later"
Feed The Birds....not the cats!!!!
I know....my spelling's crap !!
Thanks folks. There is still hope then. I will not give up hope just yet. I really hope to see some signets on the lake this year
Bit more info from the BTO birdfacts on mute swan
Incubation 34 to 45 days

Seriously thinking about trying harder!

You may see cygnets :)
It's both what you do and the way that you do it!

Sorry about the spelling.
My local swan is a bit of a champion at having cygnets.
These are all from 2009.
Tiger Signature
This pen had 8 cygnets in 2007 and all survived. She had 8 in 2008 and 5 survived. Then the cob was killed. However she found a new partner in 2009 and as you see she had 9 cygnets which all survived until about September when one was got by a fox.
In 2010 there was a flood in early May and there were fears for the nest. However she still managed to hatch at least 5 cygnets.
So 31 cygnets in 4 years. Wow.
She is sitting on eggs right now.
Wow, that is taking motherhood to the extreme. This is a new Pen and last years mate died earlier this year. I really hope they have a happy ending.

Well we were a bit sceptical when the cob was killed in 2008 but our girl made light of it. Here is a picture I really love of a happy family from 2008.
