According to chat, the egg in the pic was 'laid' by #1 chick?! and the original unhatched egg was 'removed' a couple of days ago

There are a couple of super pics of adult BO's posted too

We need to see the other side of the egg for comparison

Thanks Wendy. The 'new' egg is in the exact same position as the 'old' one.

From the pics on chat, I think chick #1 did a PS on the 'old' one looking like it had laid an egg?

I've 'copied' and zoomed in on the pic posted on chat 'after the egg was laid' - damage can just be seen on the right side so I think this confirms it is the original one

I think we can safely say that BOT would not have accepted the 'phenomenon' without prior 'timed' photos showing an empty floor space

Thanks, All, for the posts. The story you report on the chat for this nest on Essex Wildlife Trust reminds me of a visit to the tiny museum in Godalming, Surrey, many years ago. They have an historical account of a Godalming woman in the 16 or 1700s (sorry, forgot the date) who claimed she gave birth to a number of rabbits and she was believed by many for some time. Well, she did have the rabbits which proved it, apparently! Other people insist they have seen UFOs. Some write fantasy and science fiction. We humans are endlessly able to invent and/or to misunderstand just about anything! Studies have shown how easy it is for us to believe we saw something which wasn't there, to miss things which are there, and to misinterpret what we do see. It is very easy to leap to the wrong conclusion. Amazing the species has lasted this long!

Incidentally, why would they remove an egg from an occupied nest.
