My dog brought me a present this lunch time - found somewhere in my garden. Unfortunately it is a bit chewed.
Please can anyone identify it for me, and is it likely to be this years, or could it be an old one?
It is white with no marks or speckles. The membrane under the shell is a sort of grey colour. The shell is clean.

Yes, I have collared doves, but not as many as you and some other people on the forum. I have 3 pairs who visit regularly.

So your 3 pairs are a good number to have {smile}
We had more Collared Doves when I lived in our last house a mile for where we live now.

i think its a doves egg... somtime they start laying nesting early in trees and have been kown to have young in any month of the year... its mostly depends on food being avalable in the area... anywhere the can find food near by ( fast food outlets ) etc.... if the food is there then they.ll breed whenever they can....... some fedal pigeon under the railway bridge near us have got young-uns now as well......
dont just look enjoy and leave for others to share after you. we dont own the earth we just rent a small part of it....

You know what it's like when one event makes you reflect on another event. Since this egg arrived, I have noticed one of my collared dove pairings is now a singleton. He comes on his own to feed, and sits alone for short periods in the apple tree next door. This is unusual for my doves. They are always in pairs, and very loving to each other. This has been the case for several days.
Could this be a sign they are incubating eggs?
Either that or the sparrowhawk has had a good feed.

I would be inclined to go with a Squirrel as the culprit being responsible for your "smash and grab".

That's very possible SeymourClearly as I have a grey squirrel who visits from time to time. Thanks for the link, it is very interesting.
I still have this egg sitting on the dressing table in the spare bedroom!! Perhaps I should give it back to the squirrel next time he visits.
I eggspect he will be eggstatic about that !!
