Get Ready for Autumnwatch Friday 7th October at 8.30pm

Yes it starts a week tonight.

It comes from the National Arboretum at Westonbirt in Gloucestershire and from the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust Slimbridge reserve.

Sadly no Kate Humble as she's working elsewhere, but Michaela Strachan is stepping into the breach.

Best wishes Chris

  • Just looked on the website, Kate Humble is doing a programme that will be on t.v next year called 23 Degrees.  Hopefully she will come back to Spring watch/Autumn Watch.

I have never seen an albino squirrel before.

  • The viewers clip of the gull picking off bats was interesting, never even seen that mentioned in old books, very opportunist of the gull.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • personally I thought Michaela was a breath of fresh air,  Never been a fan of Kate.  someone on another forum thought the programme  tedious and aimed at children , Well GOOD, we need to get them inspired and interested.  ,Thought the piece on the Hornetts nest was  good and the fact the Crossbills bills don't all cross in the same direction, to enable several birds to feed on same cone!!!?? well they could do that anyway by going round ??, but found it fascinating nevertheless and will look closer in future. The Horseshoe bat piece was brilliant and the video of the gull eating the bats as they left the roost, wow. I enjoyed the programme and looking forward to the rest of the series.

  • We really enjoyed the programme. I wasn't sure about the advice given to the girl with the albino grey squirrel. If a grey squirrel, albeit albino, has been taken from the wild then surely it can't be released back into the wild as it's a non-indigenous species?

    Best wishes Chris

  • The most enjoyable part of the program so far, for me is Mr Osprey, aka Roy Dennis, and the Welsh ospreys.

I wish the BBC would give this program a total re-vamp, I think the format is becoming stale.

Susan, agree that we need to get the children involved, the more the merrier but surely tis is aimed at adults considering the time it is broadcast

  • I applaud everything that the series has achieved so far, i.e. engaging children's interest and allowing adults access to simple easy-to-understand information, amongst other things.

But I would like to see another programme, specifically aimed at the more informed Birder fraternity, that goes beyond the 'This is a Robin and this is a Blackbird' stage.

I'm trying not to sound pompous or snobbish here :) I'd just like to be shown a programme presented by the likes of Seymouraves or aiki instead of KH/MHG/CP who are obviously aiming at Noobies.....

To my knowledge there hasn't been a programme aimed beyond basic beginners.....

If 'The Sky At Night' can have a programme on once a month for 50 years then surely we could have one!

    Just my two'pennarth.....

  • I agree graham, Just as Fred Dibnah proved with his shows on steam that people can be interested in the more detailed approach to a subject.

I'd love to see the Life of Birds the extended addition with much greater detail and comparisons between similar UK species such as Reed and Marsh Warblers...especially as In my patch I don't have regular access to see birds or various fowls and would love to get an opportunity to learn more about the birds my area lacks.

    Hi-

this comment comes up on most bird forums eventually; The problem is it's been tried but they got it wrong. Back in the late 80s or so there was a  30 mins Birding  TV program but they had it fronted by Tony Soper who's a great guy and a good birder but he didnt connect with the hard core Twitching/ birding fraternity. As a group Birders cover such a wide range of opinions/ abilities/ knowledge/ percieved level of knowledge /  tolerance for certain personalities / that  it would be hard to find a mean.

Birders are well served by magazines and sebsites that keep them informed about ID and places to visit etc.  Pagers and text services give them info on the latest news and discussions on splits etc.

There is plenty of stuff out there to discuss but atm bird forums ( even though the content  can be variable, unreliable and ill-informed- birding isnt a democracy, the majority aren't always right) provide a decent platform.

    :)

ps-  I have done the odd radio prog but I am apparently not suitable for TV :))

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides,  binoculars, scopes, tripods,  etc - put 'Birding Tips'   into the search box

  • Just watched Autumnwatch on the Iplayer and was most impressed, I'm so glad I gave it another chance, I can't wait for the next installment.

It was also good to see the gentle wind ups between the presenters, although I still do miss those weird little vids Bill used to make on things like 'the life of a Woodlice '.
