BBC Springwatch

Well, Springwatch starts again on Monday. I for one am looking forward to it although it has never been the same without Bill Oddie. I have a lovely personal memory of Bill. He was speaking at an event at the NEC in Birmingham and then was signing copies of his new bird book. It was lovely to meet him face to face. He was very shy but charming.

I live just up the road from Martin Mere WWT and I love it when the programme comes from there - so many familiar sights. I hope it returns there before too long.

Phew - thanks Marjus. Nearly gave my age away then, but 36 is quite respectable. I am a tad older than that but having an EM is a bit of a giveaway!!!

AM was my favourite programme when I was younger and 'My Family and Other Animals' by Gerald Durrell was my favourite book.

Can anyone remember what JM used to call the bird food he made in the coconut? It had a really good, nonsense name and I just can't recall what it was (another sign of being over 36!!!)

Well, I wasn't born then but I remember the old tellys with the potter's wheel and the 'tescard and some music'

My mum and dad never really moved on from there telly-wise and I never knew there was any other channel than BBC1 until I was 23!! At least I was able to grow up with Blue Peter.

    Tee hee

  • I watched last night and cringed at the KH comment.

I agree with Jef about stereotypes now, it's getting a tad boring.

But don't forget, SW is completely scripted, down to the jokes. And for me it has lost it spontaneity now, which is why I am a little sad that Bill Oddie left. I guess the SW team and Series Producer wish to have the usual American format of 'Good Guy, Bad Guy'. Why do we always have to copy their shows. I remember when the BBC was very innovative.

I've seen KH on other wildlife progs and she comes across as very intelligent and very knowledgeable but on this show she seems to defer to the others. I guess that's the best way to get info across in a short space of time.

IMHO there is a little too much 'Presenter' and not enough 'Wildlife'. I again agree with Jef, why can't we just watch the wildlife stories unfold with voiceovers? I can only think of Presenter interaction with the viewer and trying to get more people interested.

Lastly, I think it is a great show as are all the other wildlife progs on TV. Better than Corrie; Strictly CD and Football.

Oops! That will set the cat amongst the pigeons! I'm a Rugby fan so will have to keep my head down over the next 4 weeks.

    Best wishes, Graham

PS: Johnny Morris? I remember him, me and John Logie-Baird getting together about inventing a box that presents pictures in addition to sound! We switched it on but there was nothing showing! No change there, then! Doh!

  • I totally agree, less presenter(especially Chris Packham) and more action would be appreciate. But I still sit through his supercillious smile and inate acting as I enjoy the birds so much. have to say I felt Halcyon River Diaries was a most excellent show with natural presentors.
