I'm sitting here looking proudly at my new purchase. A camera. I can't believe I've actually done this, but I am so envious of all the superb photos on this forum and in the galleries that I couldn't possibly emulate with my Coolpix.
After some research on the internet, advice from a friend, and then the coincidental thread started by Littleowl earlier today, I went out and bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 18x. We are lucky to have a photographic retailer locally that is very competitive on price. I paid £249 for it, which I think is an excellent price, and the friendly and obliging retailer is on hand should I need help or if it goes wrong. He recommended this particular camera for a technophobe like me who wants an automatic point and shoot with a good zoom.
I now have to read the instructions. Don't hold your breath for any pictures just yet!!

My photos will get better when I get a memory card. At the moment I am using the inbuilt memory so have lowered the resolution to the minimum to save memory. Even with that I keep having to import them and delete, I am taking so many and having lots of fun! Hubby has sent off for a card for me. He wouldn't buy the ones on offer in the shop as he can get them cheaper.

As for your first photo - what a cracker. Lovely shot and well done you.
Can I be another dumbo? and ask about cropping what's the main reason for cropping photos?

Hope Sparrow does not mind me answering this post {smile}
Cropping - means you take a picture of your subject, yet your subject could be near, or in the distance.
If the subject is near that makes it easier to download you picture as it is with no changes. If your subject is far away it is another issue.
With cropping.... if your subject is far away you can use the Crop facility to blow up a part of your photograph ie your subject so it is clearer to see for people on the RSPB Forum. Yet, you can still retain the same size of the picture to post on the RSPB {800x600} the best exposure size.
You are blowing up the part of the photograph that you want to show others ie on the RSPB Forum.

My heart dropped right out of my mouth, along with some very ripe language. Even the blue tit in its roost shut it's ears. Anyway, all's well that end's well.
Have you tried cropping a photo before you re-size it? If your photo is very large and you crop the main subject, removing some of the top, bottom and sides of the photo, it makes the subject bigger. Or at least it does in theory!!!
I've added a few to my gallery and there is one I am very pleased with - a starling in full colour.
