New Camera!!!!

I'm sitting here looking proudly at my new purchase. A camera. I can't believe I've actually done this, but I am so envious of all the superb photos on this forum and in the galleries that I couldn't possibly emulate with my Coolpix.

After some research on the internet, advice from a friend, and then the coincidental thread started by Littleowl earlier today, I went out and bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 18x. We are lucky to have a photographic retailer locally that is very competitive on price. I paid £249 for it, which I think is an excellent price, and the friendly and obliging retailer is on hand should I need help or if it goes wrong. He recommended this particular camera for a technophobe like me who wants an automatic point and shoot with a good zoom.

I now have to read the instructions. Don't hold your breath for any pictures just yet!!

Cheers, Linda.

    Make yourself a cup of tea and start again in the morning. It's very late now and you are probably too tired and furious to concentrate.

    Cup of tea? Bottle of brandy more like!!!! It is a good job I am fastidious about backing up. I really should have read the instructions before attempting to do anything. I have made a list of which folders I have restored and will finish it tomorrow. I'm sure I didn't tell it to access every folder on my machine!!!!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Sparrow, you don't want to be telling "it" to do anything. What you want to do is tell your computer to take the photos off your camera. I don't use the camera software to import pictures - I always use the little Windows box that comes up which has several options - one of which is Import Pictures. The box has a rather strange title (I think it is AUTOPLAY) but the option of Import Pictures is definitely on there and it should open up automatically when your camera is plugged into the pc and then turned on. You may have to look for it on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen though as the camera software may open on top of it thus hiding it from view.

    The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

    The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

    Hi Sparrow

    Leave all PC buttons alone, sleep on it, and read this thread afresh tomorrow.

    It will be the best way forward - me thinks {wink!!!}

    Another new day bring all things to light once more

    We will be here for you tomorrow to help out too!! {wink}

    Regards

  • Hi Squirrel,

    I have always used the Microsoft Camera Wizard to import pictures. It sounds like this is similar to the one you use. You are right - the camera software did pop up on top of the Wizard so I thought I would give it a try!! I was so mad with it that I uninstalled it. One thing it did do though was to play back a video I did on the camera without knowing - lovely recording of my desk, computer mouse, telephone and cup of tea!! I managed to import the 3 pictures I took with the Wizard, and have edited them in my normal software.

    I think the camera photo software can wait until I know better what I am doing.

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi all,

    You will NOT believe what I have just done. What a dumbo. I downloaded the software that came with the new camera, thought I knew what I was doing and attempted to download 3 pictures I took of the dogs. (Moderators shut your ears) the bloody thing started to copy every single photograph on my computer, and believe me there are thousands of them, most of them important. I couldn't stop it. I then thought I would select all and delete, just to get them off the software programme. This worked fine. Then I discovered it had deleted every single photo from my computer!!!!!!! I have just spent the last hour retrieving them all from my back up pen drives and still haven't finished. I could be here for several more hours yet. Am I the sort of person to be trusted with a new camera?

    Oh no what a b****r, have you looked in the recycle bin, they might be in there, you could just copy and paste it back to there proper place if they are.

    There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.

  • Oh Sparrow, I am so sorry. So glad you had backed up your files. If it is too big a job, you can get a reputable computer shop/ person to retrieve your files, but I have no idea what it would cost.

    Yes, BBB, they were all in my recycle bin - all 2,902 photos. Why didn't I think of that? This really is a dumbo day for me. Thank so much for that!!! I don't have to copy and paste - I can restore them back to where they came from at the click of a button.

    You can have 2,902 Brownie points!!!!!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Oh Sparrow

    I have only just read your post about you deleting your pics and then getting them all back from your pen drives. You were lucky to have backed them up. I know of a computer expert who lost all of his photos once!

    I hope to see pics from your new camera soon.

    Best wishes Chris
