Bedraggled and wet by the looks...

I finally managed a short wander yesterday (the last few days in Cornwall took their toll on my leg), and saw lots of herons amid the fallow deer, away from the sodden ground around the river. It was like watching covids following the deer, seeking out ticks and other invertebrates.

As soon as a deer moved, they were there, prodding the ground.

I could be wrong, but that's the impression it gave me, and talking to a resident livestock handler to the neighbouring field, after we shared notes, felt that was a good surmising.

I wouldn’t disagree with your assumption Mike however I wondered with the herons diet being quite varied and with the crop just been harvest it might have been looking for a vole, mouse, or a rat for its evening meal ? It’s not that long ago I saw a little egret in a field close by to this field but we shall never know for sure.

I'd think there is a very strong possibility on that small rodent scenario, when you consider the size some of the fish, or even eel, that a heron catches and swallows hole.

Yes mike If you look on utube and put in Heron eats big pike, you will be amazed at the size they can eat.
