i thought i’d seen all the different birds i was ever going to see in my garden… until a heron turned up. Then he turned up again last week, and again today, and seems to have a taken a liking to sitting on the fence about ten feet from my kitchen window.
I don't live anywhere near water, just a little shallow stream about five streets down, so why he’s sitting here i haven't a clue.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I would put money on there being a garden pond close by, hence the visit, to check the area out for food. The stream is a possibility, depending on its size, a heron would instinctively know if there was a chance of food in the stream.
We had a regular visiting heron, checking out our small garden pond, until spring 2022, which would trigger the trailcams in the garden, then a visit, could be the same, or another one, August 2022.
The links below take you to three photos of one visit back in April 2017. Feel free to peruse the photos, they're all for public viewing.

As said, a fine graceful bird.
