I had always expected to see my first avocets at Minsmere and had booked a coach trip with a Bird Club to go there in May 1977 - then bumped into 2 on Sidlesham ferry in mid winter:)

Brilliant photos Mike and well done on getting your first avocet photos. You've done better than me, I've still yet to see an avocet in flight (seen lots wading), let alone take a photo of one flying.

Thanks Mike. Yes it really was an unexpected delight. Saw some white birds on the opposite side of the lake and assumed they would be egrets. We ended up sitting there for some time then got lucky as a pair took off and flew more or less over-head.
