Cannot download 'Coolpix' pictures for some reason?

Hi there

I have a 'Nikon Coolpix S200' Camera that I have not used for well over a year now. I installed all the associated disks when I got the 'Nikon Coolpix' and have kept it 'live' on my PC - ie icons on the desktop.

OH decided to use the 'Coolpix' last weekend for taking pictures. I am trying to download the pictures at the moment, but to no avail.

It is coming up with an icon
Found New Hardware

Locate and install driver software.

I agree to this message and then it tells me the

'software' has failed.

Now this is puzzling me as I know I have already installed the original disks and now it is although there is no sign of anything relating to the downloading of the 'Nikon' camera disks.

One thing that have crossed my mind, and that is the Nikon software has been updated, so my downloads have become redundant.

The second thing is I have had a newer printer installed, but I cannot see there being any issue with that at all.

Thirdly, I have the Canon Powershot G10 that has involved more disk downloads, and I keep the icons for this camera too. Is there a clash in photo software somewhere?

Any ideas anyone.

Thank you in advance

  • HI,

Not really sure what the problem is but can offer only the following advice.

I never use the camera software to download pictures so have not installed on my PC. Windows can usally recognise most cameras as removable storage like they would a memory stick. (I have four cameras so installing the software for each would be a nightmare and I use Photoshop anyway)

However this does not really help you. I can only suggest you try uninstalling the Coolpix software and perhaps reinstalling it.

Do they take different memory cards? I know the canon takes an SD card, but don't know what the nikon uses. (if the same but the card into the canon) Also try a different USB port as these can sometimes fail to recognise things, especially the ones on the front of a PC.

I am sure there will be an expert that has a better answer so I'll stop waffling now.

  • Hi Blackbird,

It sounds like the downloading software for your new camera is the default on your PC. There will be nothing wrong with the software for your old camera, you just need to find the folder on your PC that it is stored in and open it from there. It should be easy enough to find it in the Programmes section on your PC.

Any newly installed software will automatically become the default unless you tell it otherwise. Like Bramble, I use the Windows Wizard to download my photos from both our cameras.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Personally I would just reinstall the disk

  • Hi Blackbird

Have you tried using a memorycard reader rather than plug the camera to your computer? The card readers don't need specific software installed, but the computer recognises the card reader in the usb port - useful especially if you have cameras that use different memory cards.
