All about Camera's.......

Hi there

I thought it would be a good idea to open a thread about questions we all have about use of our camera's.

At the present moment I am reading and typing a summerised version of instructiosn to ge the best use out of our Canon camera,

First question I would like to ask is

'How many people on this Forum own a second memory card and a second battery?

Is it worth getting a second memory card, and battery?

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy,

Yes and yes (and yes)!  I bought a second memory card as a backup for my holiday in OZ.  They are both 8gb and I knew I wouldn't fill even one but I don' trust these things totally and wanted a spare in case one failed or I dropped it in the Murray River or something.  I have two spare batteries and use them in rotation with my original one.  If you are away from 'civilisation' for a while it is handy to have the spares and especially handy if, like me, you sometimes forget to charge your spare or leave it in the charger when you go out!!!  A third battery comes to the rescue then  ;-)

There is something new to learn everyday...

Absolutely essential in my view to have at least one spare battery and several memory cards. When I go on my travels abroad I also take the battery charger and of course a world travel plug adaptor.

  • I have three camera's, two of which take SD cards.  I therefore have two cards.  One camera is a Canon G10 which although I really like, it is not great for birds due to lack of Zoom.  I don't really go out much taking picures so have not yet bought a new battery for this camera.

The other camera is a new purchase which I bought for my daughter to do her photography A level.  It is a sony DSLR A230.  A  camera for which I have two lenses. (these were give to me) but am definitely going to look at getting a new battery as this one does not last nearly as long as the canon.

My other camera is my old Fuji finepix, which is pocket sized and the battery lasts ages.  It takes XD cards of which i have three as they were once on special offer.

My point being it depends on when and how much you use your camera.  Memory cards are very cheap to buy online so definitely worth having spare.  Batteries are quite expensive, but worth it if going to be away from a source of electricity or heavy usage is intended.

    Thank you TJ

We only have only one battery at the moment, and we did take the recharger and the travel adaptor when we went to Spain last year.

As for memory cards we own one, and tend to download all images onto the PC after useage. and remove all images so the memory card is reused over again.

I think I will get some more memory cards for the sakes of wear and tear.  Good tip.  Same applies with another battery!

How much are batteries and memory cards to buy?

    Regards

  • Hi Blackbird,

I just ordered a class 4, 16gb card for our camera for £21, I dont know about the battery for your camera but we can get one of those for our camera on e.bay for just over £5, thats where the card is from also.

    Hi Sarah

You have the same G10 Canon camera as I do. I did not know about the lack of Zoom on this camera, so that is interesting to find out.  I have to admit I find it fiddly to focus and refocus on birds - they move about so much.

We also have a Coolpix Camera  (Dave has that and is using it at the weekend for his fishing trip, and left me with the Canon). The Coolpix is a much more basic camera, but still shots some nice pictures.  Again we have one battery and one memory card for this camera too.

We must increase our equipment.  We do not use our camera non stop, so at least that is something we have not done yet ..... though we will use it a lot on our holiday to Spain this year.

  • I use the following two websites for memory cards and printer supplies.

    http://www.mx2.co.uk/

    http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=777&r=AWIN

They are both in channel islands. delivery is generally free from fisrt one. It has always been quick and reliable.  I am not an ebay user but you may be able to get them on there too,

  • Hi blackbird

MDH is the photographer in our household.

A couple of years ago was our 25th wedding anniversay and we booked a very special holiday to Canada and Alaska. I bought him a new camera for it. As we were on a tour for the first week and only stayed in each hotel for a night at a time - I bought him a second battery and memory card. I have to say the second battery was a godsend as we could charge one up overnight but still use the camera for our evening shots. We did however end up buying a 3rd (!!!!) memory card (it was a special holiday and once in a lifetime so he took an AWFUL lot of pics). We do find it useful now to have the second card on hand as we don't always get around to downloading and having a spare is useful if you are nearly full!

Judging by the lovely pics I see on here I'm gonna have to learn how to take photo's and the third may become my birdy card!! lol

So my answer to your ? is yes, its very useful to have spares!!!
