Hi Everyone
I am getting closer to getting the Canon 7D and the 300mm prime lens with the extender so I thought today I would take a trip to Calumet in Edinburgh and get a quotation.
I was able to hold the 7D which was brill but they had no lenses on display for me to try. The quotation was £40 dearer than WEX for the same order but I have been offered an extended warranty on the camera body and 300mm lens although on my quotation sheet they have only mentioned the lens so will have to double check. I am preferring Calumet and the assistant did say that if I was not happy with the lens I would receive a full refund ie no postage hassle if returned within 14 days!
My first question is are these extended warranties worth it or should I save the £40 at WEX and get a free bag too!
My next question - has anyone gone through Gatwick or Heathrow and seen the 7D in the duty free?I know the big white lenses are not there!
I saw a monopod and head that I liked. Has anyone bought them or could anyone recommend something better. I liked the tripod as it has extending feet which if you are standing still for an hour it could help the weight a bit. I have used the amazon sight just to show you all what I saw.

Thanks for all your help again.
No stopping you now then. Enjoy.
Take care all, Stich.

Oh, that's so interesting Lolly, and glad you are pleased with the kit; I may take a look myself as it sounds brilliant :) good luck with it all.

I can hear Lolly's finger twitching over that "Buy Now" button for the whole list :-)

Barbados ? lovely :) just don't drop the camera in the sand ! Watch out for the humming birds and have a great time Lolly.
Trouble is, if you do get a hummer (I thought that was a big American jeep thingy), you'll wish you had the Canon :-)
No hummers in Scotland - just a load of these things - blasted birds seemed to be everywhere!!
Excellent photograph, Joe.
Thanks Alan for the link to Joe's photograph.
Have a great holiday Lolly.
Wow Joe, a super photo of my favourite bird! Was it caught by chance or were you on a mission - a known fishing loch perhaps.

Lol! If hummingbirds were as big as Ospreys, you'd be in serious trouble!
Sheila - a little bit of local knowledge from a chap where we were staying put us on to the location. Loch Garten and the like are great with the nest cameras etc, but are a bit distant for your own pics, whereas this is a bit closer whilst still not disturbing them. I'll process a few more and Flickr them (got a few to trawl through as yet).
Lolly, I just ordered a new tripod and the Giottos MH1311-652 Ball Head, after reading all the reviews it looked good quality and highly rated so I came off the fence and bought the both, plus a shoulder strap and a couple of snap on lens caps as the original canon ones drive me nuts when the hood is attached !! Now have to start saving up again for the next piece of kit lol
I find it depends on a lot of things. On monopod, I'd tend to shoot as normal, using the mono to take the weight of the lens and help hold it steady. On tripod, sometimes remote switch, sometimes mirror lockup and remote switch (that tends to be for macro stuff). A useful feature for when out and about and you've forgotten the remote is the camera's in-built timer. The 7's got a normal (10 sec) and also a 2 sec timer, which is handy to reduce bouncing from you pressing the shutter when using a tripod (line up the shot, press the button, take hands off camera, it will be a lot steadier when the shutter actually releases). Just remember to switch it back to normal after using it, or the next shot you'll press the shutter button, nothing will happen, you'll turn the camera round and look into the lens* and "click", you'll have taken a pic of your nose.
* No-one knows why everyone does this, but they do!!
