Was out this morning real early to learn bird song with my real good friend Grace. She is amasing at telling what is singing where.
Anyway... we heard and saw the Blackcaps . Willow Warblers (first Ive heard them this year so that was great.
A few of the calls I did know like the Blue tit and the great Tit also the Wren and the house sparrow. It was a great time .
By the way I dident know that Mute swans made any kind of sound other than a Hiss when they get miffed at ye We stood and watched one that was making a kind of Mewing sound!...
So about 09:15 we sat by the river watching the Treecreepers when I noticed the gulls go up and thought ok there has to be a Sparrowwhak or maybe my mate the Buzzard going about .
We watched one gull start to dive on a Bird and by its size I thought it was the Buzzard. I then lifted my Bins to my eyes then kinda spat my coffee out when I saw it was the OSPREY.
Its the first time I have seen one on the River Don. It wasent fishing just passing over and the funny thing was that Grace said about 10 minutes before hand that she would love to see one LOL.
All in all it was a fantastic mornings birding with 3 of the wagtails seen also
Pied / Grey and white wagtails.
Not bad for being in the City lol
Cheers

Hi AL
Sounds like a great morning and what a good variety of birds to see. The highlight must have been that osprey though.
I've been trying to learn bird songs too. Not easy is it. I'm getting better but still a long way to go.
Regards TJ

Hi Al,
Fabulous morning out, and great for you and Grace to see the Osprey. I'm also doing my best with bird song, but with being completely tone deaf it is very difficult. I am starting with the garden birds and the ones I see on our dog walks. I hear a song, see the bird, make a mental note, then can't remember it!
Cheers, Linda.
See my photos on Flickr
Thanks folks
Aye it was a fantastic morning
Sorry no photo of the Osprey but I did digiscope a photo of one of the seals on the Island I will post it on here when I can find someone that knows what they are doing lol
What a day and a mgnificent bird to see.

Sounds like a fabulous morning, WOW an Osprey - you lucky lucky thing!
As for birdsong, I really really need to work on this, barring the most obvious I wouldn't know what was what when out and about and I realise you can miss out on so much by not being able to identify what you are listening too.

Which Is a wonderful thing I may add :D
Al, what a fabulous day. I remember when we lived in the NW for a while, getting extremely excited seeing an osprey circle over our garden. This happened two years in a row. I think I woke the whole area, shouting my husband to come and see it.
Saw the Osprey again today down in the park at 3:10 pm
fantastic to watch but couldent get a photo . I need to get a camera that has a Viewfinder lol although this wee thing is good for usein with the scope I even managed to scope the swan on her nest Today .
Hello Al
What a lovely morning, how fantastic to see an Osprey. I am glad you had such a great time.
I am very impressed that you can recognise different bird songs, I THINK I can recognise Great tits, chaffinch and maybe robins and blackbirds singing but that is it. I would hate to be tested on it!
I notice you are playing a guitar so I assume you are musical........I wonder if that helps :-)
Kind regards Jane.
