For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Hi John, great photos.
I have had a look through my little book (which is probably not as comprehensive as large tomes) and the nearest I can match to it is a 1st Year Great Black-backed. So..... you can probably rule that one out as I am not well-versed in Gull i.d. LOL
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hi
Thats what it looks like to me as well.
Fabulous photographs. Squirrel is most certainly correct - with all things considered I think it is a Great Black Backed Gull.
I agree but I doubt it is that easy!!! Great photos though.

Hi John
Super 'inflight' pictures. {well done}
I find it so hard to ID any juvenile Gulls no matter what they are.{puzzled}
We all learn from one another and that is what is good about the RSPB Forum

I would say 1st winter Great Black Backed Gull.
Hi,
The size of the bill , especially it's depth and the pale head and breast lead me to the conclusion that it's a Great Black backed gull in juvenile / first winter plumage.
