Saw these birds at the salt marshes at Lymington on the Hampshire coast yesterday afternoon. There were five of them feeding on a muddy bank. I thought they might be buntings of some sort but the don't look like the ones in my books. I would have checked with the RSPB identifier but it was so slow to load that I gave up! Could anyone ID for me please? Thanks.
ps - I might have a few waders for ID later! lol!

Hi SB,
Looking at your top photo, the birds clearly show a very long hind toe.
I would suggest they are either Sky Larks or Meadow Pipits.
I would be more inclined to say Sky Lark.

Of course they are skylarks, I should have known that. Doh! I had forgotten that they forage in flocks in winter and they look just like a photo in one of my books now I have had another look. We have skylarks in the field behind the house but of course I only see them in flight when I am alerted by their fantastic singing and then they just look like dots in the sky!

Hi SB, glad you got the i.d. sorted out. Lovely photos. I can't recall the last time I saw a skylark. Well done on spotting them.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
