Brown Crow/Rookk

A friend has asked for some jelp IDing a bird she has seen a few times in Consett (County Durham)I think it may be a Leucistic Crow or Rook but am not 100%.

Any Ideas?

.

Thanks.

  • Welcome Ridley :) thats a handsome young crow, it's neither melanistic or luecistic but is in "cinnamon phase" young corvids in transition have this colour, usually they hide away as they really stand out.

The common factor when these birds pop up is that they are always bolder people friendly birds, which is why we get cracking shots like this, by rights he should be well hidden and emerge when fully sleek and black again.

It's both what you do and the way that you do it!

You cannot fly like an eagle with the wings of a wren.

New bit of info there mpiekp, never seen one in over 50 years birding, just shows you never stop learning in this game.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • I've seen him too a lot and have been wondering what he was, and he is really tame and not scared of our cat! Rare birds in Templetown and to think when we first moved in, we rarely had any birds in the garden! Love it!
