I don't know a lot......but am learning!!
Hi Claire
Think its a Reed Bunting, very nice
It's a male reed bunting. Their normal habitat is by rivers or lakes but there have been many reports of them visiting gardens during this severe weather.
Well spotted.

thank you very much!! It was driving me mad - have tried looking online and in our little book, but it wasn't in there. We live on the edge of the Brecon Beacons - there are a couple of lakes, nearest about a mile away.
Hello Claire, I see you have already had your answer. Hope to see more of you on the forum.
Hi Claire, welcome to the forum. The bird in your photo is indeed a Male Reed Bunting.
The above photo's are Reed Buntings

Welcome to the forum Claire.
Your little reed bunting is lovely. I thought I had some in my garden the other week but wasn't alert enough to get a photo as I mistook them for sparrows. Dumbo. I will know better next time.
Cheers, Linda.

thank you for that - they are gorgeous birds and I hadn't seen them before - been trawling the net, but without the beginnings of a name it's an impossible task! Thank you everyone for helping me! I'm going to see whether i've got a photo of the house sparrows now - we have loads of them visiting the garden - we've counted up to 30 on the grass in the summer under our seed feeder. I love them, they're smart little birds!
Welcome to the forum Claire! What a lovely visitor to have to your garden!!

Hello Claire and welcome. That's a lovely photo of your Reed Bunting - as are Buzzard's, of course,
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
