Hi everyone, whilst topping up the feeders in my garden this morning, noticed these tracks in the snow on the lawn, I took the picture with my blackberry phone next to them to give them scale. can anyone please identify the tracks, so I know what has visited the garden.
Thanks
Gary

I'd guess at a moorhen. Do you live near a river?

Hi Teejay, I live near a canal about half a mile away which like most waterways is frozen over, I was thinking Coot or moorhen, that are being forced to look further afield for food. Thanks
Heron.?
I think Heron, Juno {thumbs up}
We saw one sitting on our house roof the other day
Tried to take a picture but too late it took off {sigh}
Moorhan and Coots have big feet so to speak and it is a possibilty thart it could be one of those too
Puffin: Whatever it is it might come back and reveal its ID (food nibbles on the ground next to the tracks)

Hi Gary, those prints appear to be those of a Grey Heron.
The following link will confirm this for you.

I would also think Heron , how nice, pity you missed it
Gosh they are huge footprints!
thanks to those that suggested it may have been a Heron that made the tracks, it looks like that was the bird as it was in my garden briefly yesterday but I didnt dare move to go and get the camera in case it flew off, thankfully my pond is iced over and it couldnt dine on my fish!! Thanks all, Gary http://walksnwildlife.blogspot.com/
Hi, i would hazard a guess at moorhen as the tracks are very close together and a heron takes much bigger strides and has a foot about the size of a small womans hand. Moorhens have enormous feet for their size and will often come into gardens and peck around a lawn, whereas the heron is ultimately after your pondlife.
