choc brown bird with dark beak and legs, redish bown breast.......bigger than a blackbird....sitting on my bike seat for long time then chased off by a fieldfare thrush

from what i remember it was a medium width beak ...the most prominant feature was th colour ,a rich choc bron looked almost like velvet id say it was slightly smaller than a pigeon........he dodnt stay long as was chased off by a fieldfare
Hello camanda,
I'm thinking aswell it could well be a female blackbird as they are very plumped up at the miniute as its so cold and the fieldfare would of gone for it as they both eat fruits and berries. Also welcome to the forum, i'm sure you will spot a few more birds in your garden as they are desperate for food with all this snow about !

If it aint broken, dont fix it !.... all good things come to those who wait !

ok,thanks will try and get a photo if it returns!
hmm, then I'm ot sure. I I had to geass I'd go with 1st year blackbird. They go a very strange colour in their first year, sort of an off-black colour and their beaks and legs are black. That would also explain the Fieldfare chasing it. They don't like other thrushes! However I'm sure more experienced forum members will have some other suggestions :)
my daughter was observing her new bird feeder this morning when she spotted a bird fitting your birds description. We have been trying without success to identify this bird. She is not convinced that it is any sort of black bird.

Hi Camanda
I would also go for a female blackbird. Many of the blackbirds, along with the redwings and fieldfare, are coming in from the continent at the moment with this harsh weather.
I am a bird ringer and before the snow and ice stopped us from ringing, we were catching large blackbirds that were probably overseas migrants. Many of the females show the orangy breast you describe along with an all dark bill. When you record their biometrics they are usually heavier and longer winged that our residents.
Raining here in Norfolk this morning and +2 so the thaw has started, make the most of the thrushes while it is still cold.

My daughter is glad to know that it is probably a female black bird as none of her bird books included anything to do with these descriptions, she had been puzzled all day as to what bird it was. We started to wonder if was foreign and had migrated.
Hi
I am new here, and hope you dont mind me commenting on your post!! I have been searching for exactly the same sounding bird as you earlier described!! I am an amateur, but the bird I saw in my garden today also looked bigger than the typical blackbird, it was chocolate brown, with that deep red/brown neck and chest area. Ive also searched my bird books, but got no answers from that, so I came here to see if I could identify the bird, and stumbled across your post!!
Sounds exactly like the bird ive seen in my garden today :)
Hi Bekky, and welcome to the forum.
I'm a beginner myself. I have a bird that fits this description exactly who is a regular in my garden at the moment. I am certain she is a female blackbird having watched her behaviour.
Cheers, Linda.
